Naspers Foundry invested R42 million (US$3 million) in Cape Town-founded, WhereIsMyTransport. WhereIsMyTransport is a mobility technology company that improves public transport access in high-growth market cities. It uses data and technology to map formal and informal public transport networks, making public commute more reliable, predictable, safe, inclusive and accessible for millions of people in highly populated megacities.
WhereIsMyTransport’s solution has broad alignment with Naspers investments in food delivery and e-commerce that rely on mobility solutions and focuses on cities in emerging markets. They have mapped the following cities in South Africa: Cape Town, Tshwane, Johannesburg, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, East London, Ekurhuleni and George. Their datasets also power the MyCiti and Gautrain apps.
Here is a case study on the Gautrain conducted by WhereIsMyTransport.
Gautrain
WhereIsMyTransport integrated Gautrain data with mobility data from other transport providers, providing users of the new Gautrain app the option of multimodal journey planning. The Gautrain, South Africa’s first rapid-rail system, connects the cities and airport in Gauteng. Within three months of being launched, the Gautrain had one million passengers.
The Gautrain mobile app enables commuters to plan their journeys, check the route map and timetable, and the bus system provides feeder routes to the train system. Users, therefore, could plan a multimodal journey based on the extensive data provided by WhereIsMyTransport.
